Scientists from Universität Hamburg and DESY have developed a unique mobile computer tomograph as part of the ‘Understanding Written Artefacts’ (UWA) Cluster of Excellence. The device is called ENCI (‘Extracting non-destructively cuneiform inskriptions’), inspired by ENKI, the Sumerian god of wisdom. Thanks to ENCI, 4000-year-old sealed cuneiform tablets can be read for the first time. The animation shows the scanning process and the results. ENCI has already been in use at the Louvre in Paris and the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations in Ankara. Video: Cluster of Excellence UWA, Christian Schroer
