During ionisation, electrons are knocked out of an atom. What remains are "holes". Both the ejected electrons and the holes can trigger chemical reactions in an extremely short time. This is particularly true in aqueous systems. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), the scientists from Linda Young's team at Argonne National Laboratory, USA, are investigating the ultrafast dynamics of these processes at the SCS experiment station of the European XFEL in Schenefeld near Hamburg.
